Pressure and Pleasure: An anthology of contemporary Indonesian writing inspired by the work of Agus Suwage.
Published to coincide with a major solo exhibition of the artist at Museum MACAN, this anthology explores the ongoing influence of the artist’s works and ideas on generations of artists and critical
thinkers. Commissioned writers will develop new work based on a single artwork of Agus Suwage.
This publication will accompany the solo exhibition of Agus Suwage “The Theater of Me.” Instead of publishing conventional exhibition catalogue, this publication will present a series of writings. The museum will commission Indonesian fiction writers, essayist, or playwright to create writings that are based on Suwage’s specific works or particular theme and subject, or specific aspects of Suwage’s artistic practice. The writers will create their own interpretations of Suwage’s works and practice.
By publishing these writings, the publication uses creative writing approach to read Agus Suwage’s artistic practice instead of using art historical, aesthetic, or socio-political analysis. This approach will offer an alternative perspective on how to perceive the works of contemporary artists, particularly Suwage, as well as encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration in the museum’s
publications. It will also reach out to a broader range of readers.
